![]() ETC's production of Detroit '67 closed April 5 after an incredible three-week run that was well received by both audiences and critics. Emily was fortunate enough to have been cast as the understudy for Caroline (played in the show by Leslie Goddard-Baum, a Cincinnati favorite) and showcased her work at the understudy performance on April 3. At Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, interns are often cast as understudies, and they have the opportunity to work on a 20-minute excerpt from the show. Then, on one designated day during the run, after the regular performance, the audience is invited to stay to watch the understudies perform. Emily was honored to share the stage with fellow interns Kadeem Ali Harris (understudying Lank and Sly) and Aziza Macklin (understudying Chelle and Bunny), both pictured to the right with Emily, after the performance. Being able to work on a play with such intensity and relevance has been inspiring to Emily, and she is so happy to have had the experience at Ensemble. Now it is time for ETC's final regular season show, Outside Mullingar by John Patrick Shanley! Set on two farms in the Irish countryside, the play focuses on Anthony and Rosemary, neighboring farmers who have grown up next to each other. When Anthony's father considers leaving the farm to an American nephew instead of his son, Rosemary comes to Anthony's defense and encourages him to take control of his own life. But Anthony has his own secret that keeps him from doing what he really wants. Featuring guest director Ed Stern and some of the area's finest talent, including Brian Isaac Phillips, Jen Joplin, Joneal Joplin, and Dale Hodges, this production truly is not to be missed! Emily was just cast the understudy for Rosemary and could not be more excited to delve into both the fierceness and the softness of a character who has plenty of both. In addition to understudying Rosemary, Emily will act as 2nd Assistant Stage Manager for the show. Outside Mullingar runs May 5 to May 24, but the understudy performance is on May 22; on that day, Emily and her fellow intern Patrick Phillips (understudying Anthony), will perform an excerpt of the play after the regular performance. With so many well-regarded names attached to this production, it's sure to sell quickly, so don't forget to get your tickets if you're in the Cincinnati area! ![]() After Outside Mullingar closes, Ensemble Theatre Cincinnati, in connection with the Cincinnati Fringe Festival, will present the capstone of the ETC internship, a full-length play starring all the interns! Emily and the other interns have looked forward to this project from their first day at Ensemble. Throughout the year, they, along with Fringe show director and ETC Directing Apprentice Ben Ranaan, have been searching for scripts and holding private readings of various plays to find the one that best fits their ensemble and the mission of ETC, to produce new plays that are socially conscious. Finally, they are able to announce that their Fringe Festival show will be Love and Information by Caryl Churchill! The production will run from June 4 - June 6.
